The University of Denver (DU) seeks a strategic, collaborative and forward-thinking executive to serve as its first senior vice chancellor for university relations (SVC) to elevate DU’s reputation as a private R1 research institution that provides compelling academic programs and education for undergraduates and graduates alike. The University’s holistic 4-Dimensional Experience (4D) is redefining the purpose of higher education and shaping a new kind of humanistic, character-driven leader. With two vibrant campuses – the Denver campus and the recently opened James C. Kennedy Mountain Campus – DU’s integrated campus experience is unique in higher education.
Reporting to Chancellor Jeremy Haefner and serving on his senior cabinet, the Senior Vice Chancellor for University Relations (SVC) will play a critical role in helping DU frame and convey its academic and research strengths, the power of the 4D education model, and its contributions to local, national, and global communities. This is a new role overseeing a combined office of two divisions: marketing & communications and government affairs & community relations. The SVC will unite those teams to create a comprehensive, strategic platform that unifies messaging and positioning for DU, broadcasts the Chancellor’s goals and priorities, supports and furthers the goals of the entire University and its individual units, and engages internal and external constituents. The SVC will have a clear record of success as an innovative and collaborative leader in a large, mission-driven organization—ideally, a complex university setting— with substantial experience developing and implementing multi-faceted marketing and communications efforts that position and elevate the perception of an entire institution, brand, or company with multiple audiences. This person will possess exceptional diplomacy, judgment, and integrity; a full understanding of the marketing, communications, and branding process from creative conceptualization to implementation; experience in crisis and issues management; expert knowledge of traditional, digital, video, and emerging media; familiarity with the nuances and importance of government and community relations; and demonstrated success fostering a team culture and building an efficient, cohesive, and collaborative team. In addition, the SVC must possess the ability to articulate a vision for university relations (marketing, communications, government affairs, and community relations) that strengthens DU’s reputation, nationally and internationally, and inspires internal partners across the organization. Equally important are a collaborative, collegial orientation and the political savvy and flexibility to navigate a complex academic community. A bachelor’s degree and at least 15 years of demonstrated senior leadership are required; advanced degree preferred.
