Overview
NYSUT’s Research and Educational services department is seeking a strategic leader with exceptional interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills. The successful candidate will have strong project management and organizational skills and the ability to learn quickly, understand complex processes, and exercise sound, independent judgment. Applicants for this position will be expected to have knowledge of principles and practices of the NY State Education Department; NY State Higher Education and P-12 educational issues and policies; as well as relevant state and federal laws and regulations.
Requirements:
· Develop policy and advocacy papers on a wide variety of educational issues.
· Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of current NYS educational issues, policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
· Monitor and report on upcoming changes to federal and state educational laws, regulations, and policies.
· Represent NYSUT at various internal and external forums and meetings.
· Interact with New York State agency staff on a wide range of educational issues.
· Develop, plan, and present training programs for Members and Leadership.
· Analyze proposed legislation, regulations, and field guidance documents.
· Serve as a liaison with national affiliates (NEA and AFT).
· Supervise other staff as requested.
· Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree or ten years of relevant experience are required.
· Master’s degree is preferred.
· Working knowledge and understanding of the New York State policy and rulemaking processes,
· Familiarity with the workings of the New York State Education Department, SUNY, and CUNY.
· Expertise in education and policy development
· Willingness and ability to travel and work irregular hours including weekends.
· Experience effectively managing and delegating tasks to administrative and professional staff
· Knowledge and understanding of the American labor movement.
