This is a professional position which provides high-level, confidential interpreting services to the staff of the Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This position requires strict adherence to established principles of ethical conduct for interpreters.

Responsibilities - What you'll do

  • Provides high-level versatile interpreting services for the Executive Director of the MCDHH and other team members.
  • Facilitates communication exchanges involving MCDHH staff members in a variety of settings and with a wide range of individuals and groups, including legislators, Commission members, consumers, professionals and service providers who work with persons with hearing loss and members of the general public.
  • Provides interpreter services to state agencies outside MCDHH on an as needed basis.
  • Develops workshop opportunities and provides consultation to interpreters on professional techniques, practices, and resources.
  • Provides information to agencies, organizations, and members of the public concerning interpreting services and the interpreting process.
  • Participates in the development and presentation of informational materials for hearing, hard of hearing, and deaf individuals regarding topics such as the proper utilization of interpreter services, hearing loss, deafness, Deaf culture, and the legal rights of people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Aids in filing complaints of alleged violations of the legal rights of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing concerning the use of interpreters; contact involved parties to obtain additional information, explain their legal rights, and/or attempt to negotiate a satisfactory resolution of complaints.
  • Assists in the performance of such tasks as grant writing, newsletter editing, coordinating exhibits and deaf awareness events, website maintenance, and promotional materials development.
  • Prepares and submit items such as contact logs, complaint forms, and related reports.
  • Assisting with BEI test proctoring according to protocol.
  • Approves MICS and RID Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon request.
  • Maintains sponsorship status with RID.
  • Processes Provisional Certification.
  • Assists with hosting the MCDHH exhibit booth at various events (not in an interpreter role).
  • Interprets and caption video contents for public viewing when needed.
  • Assist with providing interpretation for educational videos from other state agencies.
  • Assists with Rater Session Trainings.
  • Represents the Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at different agency and public functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Demonstrate regular, reliable, and engaged attendance.
Qualifications - All you need for success

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in ASL/English Interpreting, Deaf Human Services, Deaf Education, or professional study as it can apply to interpreting.
  • Must carry or be eligible to carry current certification and licensure as required by the state of Missouri.
