EDUCATION: High School Diploma required. College degree preferred. Ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend the English language at a level sufficient to communicate effectively with clients, members, guests, and co-workers.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3 years progressive experience in the areas of facilities maintenance, horticulture or landscaping. Additional experience in staff leadership, training and development is required. Must possess a valid Florida Drivers License.

JOB SUMMARY: Horticulturist to monitor the property grounds, maintain the appearance of fountains, planters, or other grounds features, install new flowers and plants, maintain room balcony and all interior plant containers, baskets, and boxes, maintain, and operate irrigation systems.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of horticultural techniques, such as propagation, fertilization, pruning, and pest control. Ability to operate equipment used in horticulture, such as tractors, vehicles, mowers, and chainsaws. Knowledge of irrigation systems and techniques. Ability to identify plant diseases and pests and apply appropriate treatments. Strong communication skills, ability to work independently or with a team. Attention to details and be proficient in strategic landscape planning for long term.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Must be able to drive a motor vehicle; must be able to lift, carry and move 75 pounds; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions for long periods of time, to include digging and sweeping; must be able to work in difficult positions to get to the equipment; and must be able to work with hands.

DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, to include weekends and holidays if needed.
  • Arrive to work on time, consistently.
  • Upon entering the property, arrive in proper uniform, crisp, clean and in good repair.
  • Hair must be clean and cut in a becoming style; management has final approval.
  • Attend all required training and safety courses along with office and departmental meetings.
  • Supervise and direct assigned personnel in the acquisition, care and maintenance of the indoor and outdoor plant collections and inventory records.
  • Oversee all public space, internal and surrounding outdoor gardens
  • Manage all phases of plant production to assure timely propagation of plants for various seasonal exhibits and displays within existing greenhouse conditions.
  • Responsible for horticultural integrity and appropriateness (or involved in these discussions)
  • Work with the President and CEO to develop and implement collection policies (plants and art) for the organization.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of pest control management systems, whether with natural predators or pesticides, to eliminate pest problem.
  • Coordinate training and development of horticulture department staff.
  • Work with the design team, Facilities Manager, Training and other departments to present a coordinated, exciting exhibit to the public
  • Work with staff to encourage and promote teamwork and interdepartmental cooperation resulting in a collaborative work environment between horticulture and other departments.
  • Develop and operate within departmental budget. Assist with improvement projects, gathering information, researching various options for landscaping, determining space, and preventative maintenance for the property and horticultural areas.
  • Produce and/or maintain an efficient and effective departmental structure.
  • Employ, train, supervise, recommend salary levels and terminate all department personnel.
  • Staff performance appraisals done on a timely and consistent basis.
  • Maintain high safety standards by training and working daily with staff.
  • Establish and enforce standards of appearance of all buildings, facilities and equipment.
  • Stay up to date and informed of new technologies and procedures in the industry.
  • Recommend to the General Manager and Department Heads the needs and timing for major maintenance and repair requirements and refurbishing.
  • Establishing and enforcing standards of exterior appearance and courtesy
  • Direct bi-monthly staff meetings.
  • Attend general staff meetings weekly, communicating with the other Club managers about current activities in the Grounds Department.
  • Perform and follow up on any other duties as assigned by the General Manager.
